IF_ Highlight

Reflecting on 2011 there were a couple of highlights and lowlights moving me in and out of the din of the background noise of everyday life. A trip to Queenstown, New Zealand in May and an intentionally adrenaline-laced adventure there was the one highlight that jumps out at me. The trip was one where I could dare myself out of the background-noise comfort zone and push myself on to try what were previously very intimidating experiences. Paragliding started the adventure and the bungy jump concluded the adventure. The jump is somewhat recorded in this sketch from the Snakeskin Sketchbook series here.

  3. I love your take on the theme! The textures and patterns are very nice!! I don't know why but I also see this visual as being a bit on the African art style (maybe the way the face is composed, a bit like an African mask... also the hands makes me think of animals hehe... giraffes? :) Anyway... love the style and image, all together.

  4. Thanks for your kind comments Elena, drawrite and Isabelle.
Elena, I didn't realise it was pick of the week until you mentioned it, thanks

drawrite, it's nice of you to mention the story. I've tried to craft the story to make some meaningful sense. :)

Isabelle. I like comments like yours as they often make me to look at my images in a different way that makes me notice aspects of the drawings that I hadn't considered. Yes, there is the African in many of my faces as I have drawn influence from the Shona sculpture collection that I own and love. You can see this especially if you look at my first book 'Creation' ( click on 'Creation' in the labels area for this post to go to the only post I have about it). The spirits in the book I tried to make appear eternal by drawing heavily on the solidity of the sculptural face.
The giraffe/hands comment is great as it has now entered my brain and infected it enough to stimulate some ideas around it. If the idea makes it to paper I will post the drawing with a link to your blog. _ cheers Ken

  6. Thanks Curious Art, glad to meet you.
The adventure has now moved to kayaking, so i'll have to find a way to keep my sketchbook dry and get some images going around that. :)

  10. Well laura kay I was thinking of words like bungy jump, elastic, stretching diving, springing, fear, and typographically for hands down highlight of the year. What are some of the words that come to mind for you? and some of the different things you see?
